The 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines infantry battalion stationed at Camp Pendleton, California is also known as “The Thundering Third.” In 1978, Gen. Joseph Dunford, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff was the company commander of the unit.

The 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines based in Camp Pendleton boasts of its combat record that stretches back to the First World War. The Marine All-Weather Fighter Attack Squadron 242 or VMFA(AW-242) stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan is also known as “The Bats.” The units’ motto, “death from darkness” was born when the unit fielded the F/A-18D Hornets that specializes in night attacks.
